The Moffat County Commissioners yesterday agreed to sign a letter of support, endorsing the City of Craig’s effort to raise the city sales tax during the November election. Craig residents will be asked to approve a sales tax increase of 1.75%. Under the proposed ballot measure, hotels and motels would be exempt from the tax increase, and all new and current city taxes on automobile and off highway vehicles sold in the city would be dropped. This will allow the dealers to be more competitive with others in the region. The city faces a budget deficit of $1.2 million a year for the next two years. However, according to Craig Mayor John Ponikvar, if the ballot measure is passed, the changes would result in an additional $2.1 million annually.
