The Interior Department’s Environmental Assessment of the South Taylor Pit of ColoWyo Mine is done, and reportedly shows that the mine’s operations do NOT create a significant environmental impact. That would be a blow to WildEarth Guardians, who have vowed to close every coal mine in the country, claiming the burning of coal is contributing to their theory of man-induced climate change. That finding, however, would be welcome news to the 220 miners whose jobs are threatened by the lawsuit brought forth by the envirnmental group. It would also be welcome news to hundreds of others in Meeker and Craig, whose jobs are dependent on a thriving coal industry. The new Environmental Assessment is now awaiting Secretary Sally Jewell’s signature.
