A four-year-old girl died in Flaming Gorge Saturday afternoon when the vehicle she was in went into the water. The names of those involved in the tragedy are being withheld for the time being pending notification of family members.
The Sweetwater, Wyoming Dispatch Center was notified around 4 Saturday afternoon that a vehicle had gone into Flaming Gorge along its west bank near the point where U.S. Forest Service Road 50 meets the waterline about 14 miles south of Green River. In it was the victim.
Witnesses told deputies that a party of four, including the victim, was fishing from the bank at the scene. A Jeep Wrangler, was parked back from the shoreline and apparently rolled into the water, where it submerged completely. According to witnesses, one of the party attempted to stop the vehicle and was injured in the process. The group attempted to walk out and was eventually able to reach authorities via cell phone. All were examined at Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County in Rock Springs.
Members of the Sweetwater Dive Team located the Jeep, which was on its top at a depth of about 15 feet, and recovered the victim’s body.
An autopsy has been scheduled for Tuesday in Loveland, Colorado.
