The Bureau of Land Management will soon begin trapping wild horses from the Sand Wash Herd Management Area. The BLM will be trapping and administering fertility control treatments to the heard beginning October 21st. They also plan to remove up to 50 young horses from the herd and relocate them to the Great Escape Mustang Sanctuary training and adoption program. The Sand Wash area is only suppose to hold 362 horses, currently the number exceeds 600. The high population poses a serious threat to the environment and the ecological balance of the area. The BLM has stated they are committed to maintaining a healthy wild horse population in Sand Wash over the long term.
