Avalanche Conditions In The Back Country

Following this weekends snow storms, avalanche conditions have developed in the Flat Tops and in areas of the Routt  National Forest near Rabbit Ears Pass. Strong winds and new snow have contributed to slabs being built on top of an extremely weak snowpack. These dangerous avalanche conditions are expected to last at least through tomorrow. Large avalanches may be triggered, especially on steeper slopes in these areas. Those planning backcountry excursions over the next two days should use extra caution when selecting routes. To avoid danger, it’s recommended that snowmobilers and others in the back country stick to slopes with an angle of less than 30 degrees and avoid traveling on slopes with avalanche terrain located above. For additional information on the avalanche conditions, click here.
