The Steamboat Mountain area in Wyoming northeast of Rock Springs will be closed to motorized vehicles during the months of May and June, to protect sensitive elk calving and dear fawning areas. Signs will be posted throughout this time period by the BLM, notifying the public of the closure. BLM staff will also be patrolling the area as a way of enforcing the closure. The annual closure occurs each spring, but does not affect access to private and state lands. The closure will include both sides of Steamboat Rim as well as the Johnson, La Fonte and Box Canyons. Promoting calving and fawning success in this area helps to ensure the big game populations in Wyoming remain healthy and strong. A map of the protected areas is available here.
