Following a week of smoky and hazy conditions that have even set off smoke detectors, conditions for our area are expected to begin clearing today. The Air Quality Index (or AQI) for much of Northwest Colorado has been updated from “unhealthy” to “moderate”. Moderate air quality is defined as acceptable; however, there may be a moderate health concern for a very small number of people who are unusually sensitive to air pollution. The haze is not due to local fires, but is the result of the number of large fires mainly across the Pacific Northwest and Northern Rockies. The AQI is an index for reporting daily air quality. It tells you how clean or polluted your air is, and what associated health effects might be a concern for you. You can track the Air Quality Index for our area and others, here.
