The days are now getting longer as yesterday was the Winter Solstice. And just 5 days before the Solstice the coldest temperature in Colorado in years was recorded at Antero Reservoir which is located about 25 miles southeast of Leadville where the temperature was 51 degrees below zero. Although very cold, that temperature was 10 degrees warmer than the coldest temp ever officially recorded in Colorado. That was 61 degrees below zero in Maybell back in 1985. The reason for the extreme cold at Antero Reservoir has much to do with its altitude near 9,000 feet and the fact that its surrounded by high mountains, making it a perfect place where cold, dense air can settle.
