The ballot vote for the West Steamboat Neighborhoods Annexation has passed. Beth Melton was Chair of the Yes to Locals’ Housing committee.

About 60 percent of the nearly 4,000 ballots turned in were in favor of the annexation. Local realtor Jon Wade waited at City Hall until the announcement last night.

The annexation incorporates an additional 191 acres west of the current city limits into the city. Brynn Grey Partners plans to build three neighborhoods there, with a total of 450 homes built over the next 16 to 20 years.

A Garfield County jury found a Rifle man guilty of drunk driving, that resulted in the deaths of two of his friends. 41-year-old Cody Christopher was found guilty on two counts of vehicular homicide in the rollover crash north of Rifle, in December of 2017. He also had a blood alcohol level of .237, which is three times the legal limit to drive. A 10-year-old boy was also seriously injured. Sentencing is Aug. 8.

Moffat County wrestling coach Dusty Vaughn has resigned, to take a job in Idaho. Vaughn has coached the Bulldog wrestling program for one year. He was also the PE teacher at Craig Middle School, and a football coach there. Vaughn has accepted a coaching and teaching position in Boise, Idaho, where his wife will also work. The school district is working on finding a replacement, hopefully by August 1.

West Portal Industries in Craig has secured a contract to make small parts for a major supplier for the Department of Transportation. The Craig Press reports the project is a new guardrail part that helps prevent workers from getting injured. Co-owner Jim Stoddard says he would like to make Craig a hub for light manufacturing. Inventors and entrepreneurs across the Yampa Valley are invited to work with West Portal Industries to work on their inventions. Information is on their website:

The Town of Hayden is doing aerial spraying of mosquitoes. Spraying is either going to be tonight or tomorrow night. The spraying depends on the weather and wind conditions.
