The new Environmental Assessment on the Collum area of the ColoWyo mine is to be released to the public today. The Collum area is targeted for the next pit for ColoWyo mine. In 2013, ColoWyo obtained approval to mine that area from the Colorado Division of Reclamation and Mine Safety. Since then ColoWyo has been working with the Federal Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement to complete a new assessment for federal approval. ColoWyo is confident that the results of the assessment will show that there will be “no significant environmental impact” from the new project. Area residents are encouraged to review the document and submit comments on the Environmental Assessment. Community meetings in Craig, on January 27th and in Meeker on February 5th, are also planned. People are encouraged to attend those meetings to voice there support or concerns for the project. A “Support Northwest Colorado” website has also been set up by a group of communities, businesses and individuals in Northwest Colorado to educate the public about the benefits and value of energy production in the region.
