FORECASTERS SAY FIRST MAJOR WINTER STORM OF THE SEASON IS COMING TO COLORADO
According to forecasters with the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, the first major winter storm of the season is moving toward the Colorado mountains. The Colorado Department of Transportation crews are ready for the storm, and use a variety of weather tracking sources to help them prepare, including the Center’s forecasts. CDOT and CAIC work together each winter on to reduce the avalanche potential on some 280 slide paths that crews monitor and control in Colorado. C-DOT maintenance crews are-in mountain areas-on standby for winter storm patrols. This means maintenance area crews are out on 24-hour operation-either on rotating 8- or 12-hour shifts-until they reach dry road conditions. Part of their work involves closing Independence Pass today. Last year, Colorado experienced a milder than usual winter, but forecasters are predicting a return to normal precipitation levels this winter.
VETERANS DAY ACTIVITIES IN CRAIG AND STEAMBOAT
Veterans Day is Sunday, and there are a few activities planned around the weekend in Craig and Steamboat. There will be a free Veteran’s Day Lunch at the American Legion in the Shadow Mountain Subdivision today from 11:30 to 1. All veterans and current military personnel are invited to bring their families along. A free Veterans Day Dance will be held at the Steamboat VFW tomorrow night, starting at 7. Craig firefighters are planning a fireworks show Sunday. The fireworks that weren’t used during the 4th of July, due to extreme fire conditions, will be set off Sunday night at dark. They’ll be lit off from the hill by the high school. And at 11 Monday morning, the Doak Walker Care Center will make veterans available for visits from the public.
DEMOCRATS ELECT FIRST OPENLY GAY HOUSE SPEAKER IN COLORADO
Colorado Democrats have elected the first openly gay House speaker in state history. Democratic lawmakers picked Denver Representative Mark Ferrandino yesterday to lead the House, which they re-took in this week’s election. His election won’t be official until lawmakers reconvene next session and Republicans ratify the pick. Democrats kept control of the Senate. They chose Senator John Morse of El Paso County to be the new president. Morse was Democratic Leader under the last president, who is retiring because of term limits. Democrats hope to pass civil unions legislation next year to grant same-sex couples rights similar to marriage. In-state tuition for illegal immigrants could also be on the legislative menu with Democrats firmly in charge. The session begins in January.
MOFFAT COUNTY COMMISSIONERS APPOINT FAIR BOARD MEMBERS
The Moffat County Commissioners appointed several members to the Moffat County Fair Board earlier this week. The Commissioners reappointed Karl Huntsman, Kelly Hepworth, Destry Baker and Wayne Goodenow to the board. Their terms were about to expire. Newly appointed members include Amber Kawcak, Amanda Lynn McMillen, Paula Duzik, Annette Norton and Rhonda Counts. The lengths of the terms will vary.
COLORADO HEALTH EXPERTS REMIND RESIDENTS TO GET FLU SHOTS
Dr. Rachel Herlihy, director of the immunization program at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, is urging Coloradans to get their annual flu vaccination. Along with community clinics, many grocery stores and pharmacies offer the vaccinations, as well as some employers. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends everyone six months of age and older get the seasonal flu vaccination. The vaccine is available as a shot or a nasal spray. Flu can strike anytime but is most likely to infect people between October and May. During the past three flu seasons in Colorado, flu contributed to an average of 1200 Colorado residents being hospitalized each season. No pediatric deaths due to flu were reported in Colorado during the 2011-2012 flu season, but three pediatric flu deaths were reported during the 2010-2011 season and 12 pediatric flu deaths were reported during the 2009-2010 season. People at high risk of serious flu complications include young children; pregnant women; people with chronic health conditions such as asthma, diabetes, or heart and lung disease; and people 65 years and older.
HELICOPTER PILOT CITED FOR WILDLIFE HARASSMENT
Colorado wildlife officials have fined a medical helicopter pilot from Arizona after he was accused of harassing wildlife by a group of hunters who said he was flying low over an elk herd. Authorities said yesterday that Owen Park, of Page, Arizona, was issued penalty points against his hunting and fishing privileges and ordered to pay a $200 fine. The incident occurred September 23rd near the headwaters of Granite Creek, southwest of Grand Junction. Park is a pilot for Classic Lifeguard Air Medical in Page. He did not return a phone call seeking comment. Wildlife officials say Park and his crew were returning to Arizona after delivering a patient to a hospital in Grand Junction.
