NOON FRIDAY UPDATE ON AREA WILDFIRES

Update on Brush Creek, Bear, and Powell fires
Rio Blanco, CO – Aerial resources available today are two helitankers, two type 2 helicopters, one type 3 helicopter, and one heavy air tanker. The Brush Creek, Bear, and Powell fires will share these resources as needed with the Brush Creek Fire being the highest priority.  Brush Creek Fire: The hot shot crews are beginning uphill fireline construction in steep rocky terrain. The helicopters will support their work by cooling the fire’s edge with water drops. The Incident Commander reported that even when fireline is constructed there will be much work to secure the line and mop-up.  Stats: 450 acres; 30% contained; full containment estimated for late July 21; focus today is establishing line around the five structures west of the fire (it was originally reported that were two structures to the west, but that information was updated last night); an FFA communication tower sitting two and half miles north of the fire is not directly threatened; five engines, two type 2 hand crews, 3 hot shot crews; located in Garfield County, on Bureau of Land Management, 30 miles south of Rangely.  Bear Fire: Engine crews report the fire is looking good and they do not any aerial support.  Stats: 6 acres; 50% contained; oil and gas facilities in vicinity; two engines; located 17 miles southwest of Meeker, Rio Blanco County Powell Fire: The fire has been actively burning in pinion/juniper trees. The main objective is to keep the fire from burning onto private land south of the fire. There are structures one and one half miles south of the incident. One of the helitankers and one SEAT has been requested to assist the engine and hand crew.

JUDGE RULES STATE PATROL MUST FOLLOW OWN DISCRIMINATION POLICIES

A judge has ordered the Colorado State Patrol to follow its own policies after ruling the agency promoted an anti-gay attitude.  The case stems from a former patrol captain who admitted he was gay during a polygraph exam.  The judge says the question never should have been asked and ordered the patrol to follow its own policies forbidding discrimination.  He said the fact that the trooper was not rehired after the admission shows discrimination.  Although the former captain admitted to the judge that he withheld information about his sexual orientation, the judge ruled that was irrelevant.

POLICY ALLOWING NURSES TO ADMINISTER ANESTHESIA UPHELD

The Colorado Court of Appeals has upheld a new state policy allowing advanced-practice nurses to administer anesthesia without a doctor’s supervision.  The appeals court ruled yesterday that the law allows trained nurses to perform advanced medical treatment without supervision as long as it is approved by state officials.  The Colorado Society of Anesthesiologists and the Colorado Medical Society filed a lawsuit challenging the change, claiming doctors performing operations are liable for the actions of anyone in the operating room.  Supporters say the move is aimed at helping rural hospitals that don’t have anesthesiologists on staff.  Fifteen other states have also adopted the policy.
