CASINO TALKS REVIVED IN MOFFAT COUNTY
The idea to bring an Indian casino to western Moffat County is one being pitched to the Dinosaur Town Council. A plan by the Ute Indian Tribe to build a casino close to Craig was scrapped due to public opposition around a decade ago, but the tribe’s plans are now more focused on the Dinosaur area. The Dinosaur Town Council is considering it as a way to boost the economy in the area. Moffat County Commissioner Audrey Danner says the town has no primary industry, and population issues, due to a lack of jobs, is affecting Dinosaur’s ability to function as a town. The Utes may have to purchase land for the project, as federal law states they must own the land they build on. The tribe and town are set to sign an agreement to do a feasibility study. That study will determine what would be expected from each side, and how it would be paid for. It could also determine what kind of compensation the town, and possibly the county, would get from the casino. Being on tribal land, it would not be subject to, local, state, or federal taxes.
MEEKER FALL FESTIVAL A SUCCESS
Thousands showed up to the Meeker Fall Festival over the weekend. The festival showcases Rio Blanco County’s non-profit organizations, which had food, activities and games to offer those in attendance. Mountain Valley Bank, White River Electric Association, and Enterprise Energy were the main sponsors of the event. The Eastern Rio Blanco Metropolitan Parks and Recreation was also a big part of the festival, sponsoring the grand finale of the day, the Fall Festival Challenge. Festival goers had to purchase “bank bucks” to participate in the games or buy food. The vendors later turned in the “bucks” that were collected and traded them in for real cash. The non-profits were able to collect hundred of dollars each for their organizations.
OKLAHOMA MAN SURVIVES WYOMING PLANE CRASH
An Oklahoma man is counting his blessings after making an emergency landing east of Rock Springs Friday morning. 66-year old Phillip Prigmore bought a 1968 single engine Cessna airplane Thursday in Salem Oregon. He flew it into the Rock Springs Airport that night and spent the night. Friday morning he experienced engine problems shortly after take-off. He tried to get back to the airport, but made a crash landing just before he could get there. Prigmore survived the landing, but the plane did not. A team of investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the crash.
BIKE TRAILS CLOSE FOR LOGGING OPERATIONS AT SKI AREA
The Creekside and Zig Zag mountain bike trails at the Steamboat Ski Area are closed for the season due to logging operations on the mountain. The trails closed today, so that crews can start clearing the mountain of dead and dying trees. The closure applies to campers, hikers, bicyclists, and hunters. The logging will last into the middle of October, and represents the 5th and 6th phases of the Big Spark project to remove dead lodgepole pines. Those are the final phases. A helicopter will be used to get the fallen logs from the top or middle of the mountain to the bottom.
COLORADO ENVIRONMENTAL COALITION PLANS PUBLIC HIKES
The Colorado Environmental Coalition has a hike planned this week. The Coalition took hikers through the Little Yampa Canyon over the weekend. The hikes are meant to be educational, with Saturday’s focus on the diverse range of geological, historical, and ecological attraction in the canyon. Participants were also able to observe unaltered riparian ecosystems along the river banks. Thursday’s hike will start at Carpenter Ranch. They’ll be observing what the Coalition calls “the globally unique and rare riparian ecosystem of native species. They say the ranch holds the oldest water rights in the state. The hike starts at 9 Thursday morning at the Carpenter Ranch on Highway 40, east of Hayden.
ROUTT COUNTY SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION PREPARING FOR FUNDRAISING WEEKEND
The Routt County Scholarship Foundation is holding a fundraiser this weekend. It starts with a trail ride Saturday that costs $100 per rider. Those that have their own horses can bring them, but those that don’t will be able to rent a horse that morning. The ride includes lunch and a mini concert by country music artist Bren Hill. Sunday will be the big day, with an extended concert by Hill, a dinner and a silent auction. The cost for Sunday is $25 for adults and $10 for kids 10 and under. All proceeds for from the events go to the Routt County Scholarship Foundation, which provides Routt County students with scholarship money. The group has awarded over $300,000 in scholarship money over the last 10 years. The contact number is (970) 291-9732.
DANIELS FUND OFFERS SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS
The Daniels Fund is accepting applications for scholarships. The scholarships go to high school seniors who show leadership skills, strong character, and academic excellence or promise. The intent is for the money to go to a student who financially needs it, although they are not full scholarships. Students must be nominated by a school or pre-determined organization that caters to students. Nominations must be turned in by November 30th. AGRICULTURE HALL OF FAME SEEKS RISING STAR NOMINATIONS
The Colorado Agriculture Hall of Fame is looking for deserving recipients for the Rising Star Award. The Rising Star recognizes the new generation of agriculture producers and those involved in any agri-business who are making a difference in the state’s agriculture industry. This is the first time the award will be given, and it will be handed out at the group’s 2012 banquet.
